Drum roll please…
As the Marie Claire team haggles with publicists and argues with each other about who will grace our April cover (hint: the person I am rooting for has NEVER appeared on our cover before) I thought I’d share with you some of the best magazine covers in South Africa of all time.
Original DRUM magazine covers from the 40s, 50s and 60s are considered collector’s items these days – so if you can root one out of your granny’s attic you could find yourself minted.
Joburg-based readers should make an effort to get to the BaileySeippel Gallery (Arts On Main, 260 Fox St, CBD from today till Sunday 7 February) to see a selection of limited edition Drum Magazine A1 size, archival pigment prints. The covers on display come from a collection in the archives at BAHA (Bailey’s African History Archive) and are an opportunity to see images, from that time, that are otherwise not yet easily available to the public.
