Meet Lauren Setterberg, 28, copywriter, creative coordinator and blogger.
HER BLOG: GLOSSARYZINE. BLOGSPOT.COM
‘I like to think of Glossary as my digital scrapbook. Initially I blogged about any old thing, but Gloss has evolved to include fashion posts, peeks into my wardrobe, travel guides and a smorgasbord of things that inspire me.’
WHY A BLOG?
‘I’ve always loved collecting bits and pieces and making real-life scrapbooks, so a blog seemed like the perfect platform to bung all these hobbies together. I had also started reading British blogs and thought, “Why not create my own little corner to share stories from SA?”’
‘London – I love that you can take a train into the city and find a dusty bookstore to explore or a new bar to hang out in. New York – I daydream about strolling through the Village and ducking into vintage stores with a cup of coffee. Cape Town – it’s magical with its misty mountain and scenic coastlines. I love all the vintage treasures and knick-knacks at the Old Biscuit Mill and in Kalk Bay. Amsterdam – colourful bikes beside the canals; it’s dreamy…’
WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD?
‘The Kills, Radiohead and Tom Petty are on high rotation at the moment. I also love listening to stand-up comedy. Dane Cook cracks me up.’
YOUR READING LIST?
‘Steven Levitt’s SuperFreakonomics is full of bonkers info about global warming and suicide bombers. I also love Adrian Mole.’
‘Topshop is the mecca of high-street style. If I won the lottery, I’d probably lose all my winnings there. Urban Outfitters has the coolest stuff, from retro T-shirts to kitsch knick-knacks. Locally, I love thrift stores for crazy 1980s skirts and cute neck scarves. My fave is the SPCA charity shop in Kloof, Durban.’
OTHER BLOGS YOU LOVE?
‘Niotillfem – Rodeo (Rodeo.net/niotillfem): Sandra takes really amazing photographs. The Daybook (Tandsdaybook.blogspot.com): Sydney, who blogs about ‘real life and personal style’, is the poster girl for the all-American sweetheart. WishWishWish (Wishwishwish.net): Carrie looks like she just stepped off a Sixties film set!’
WHAT ’S THE SECRET TO CREATING A BLOG THAT PEOPLE COME BACK TO ?
‘Write about the things you’re passionate about, be it Star Wars trivia, cats or shoes. Genuine passion attracts kindred spirits.’
HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR DAY JOB WITH BLOGGING?
‘I try to prep most of my posts on a Sunday and finish ‘em up in the evening. Still, I’d hate to add up all the hours I’ve spent on line!’
‘Seinfeld reruns. I love that Jerry.’
‘South Park and Saturday sleep-ins.’
‘In my next life I’d like to come back as…
A human/ATM hybrid. I’m tinkering with some test tubes as we speak.’
