What if Abercrombie & Fitch ads looked like this?

Everyone seems to be hating on clothing brand Abercrombie & Fitch of late. Why so you might ask? Well, they have been getting a lot of bad press lately, especially with activists campaigning exclusively against them, saying they only employ uber-attractive people (that is in-store and in their ads) and that they allegedly burn clothing they don’t sell instead of giving them to charity. Some say that the company feels that they don’t quite want the homeless to represent their brand.

In hot water yet again

Yup, those Kardashians just can’t help but get into trouble. Khloe K has now come under fire as her and her hubby’s T-shirt line, Rich Soil, has printed a shirt which looks very similar to the Department of Agriculture’s ‘Pride In New York’ logo. Khloe has apparently received an official letter asking her to remove this tee from the collection, or face legal action. First Khroma now this? Maybe they ought to do some research before making stuff which resembles other stuff…

The crying Beckhams

Yes, David Beckham retired from football in a blaze of, well, tears. Everyone completely forgot about his crying when they saw Victoria shedding some tears. Of course this is just normal behaviour (you know, what humans do when they’re sad), yet everyone’s shock once more made us aware of how negatively people perceive her. Do you think she is cold?

Oklahoma tornado horror

Latest reports say that at least 91 people have been killed – at least 20 of them being children – in what was a horrific tornado that tore through Oklahoma City and its suburbs yesterday afternoon. For up to the minute news go here.

Tumblr bought by Yahoo

The thriving online fashion and other communities of Tumblr, who use this platform to express their creativity on a daily basis, were very worried to learn that Yahoo recently bought Tumblr for over $1 Billion. Did this mean no more free stuff? Yahoo’s  CEO, Merissa Meyer reassured bloggers that: ‘The product roadmap, their team, their wit and irreverence will all remain the same as will their mission to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve.’ Yay, free blogging continues! Now bring on those awesome GIFs.

This year, as always, stars put their best foot forward as they graced the Cannes red carpet. Celebrities wowed, while others had some unfortunate fashion faux pas. Yet, through it all monochrome prevailed as our eyes were treated to some exquisite black & white and black or white designer ensembles. I wonder what made all these ladies decide to go this route? Perhaps fear of getting bad press? Let’s face it, nothing says simple elegance like black and white…

The beautiful babe on our radar this week is the uber-cool Harley Viera Newton. Like her first name suggests, Harley is a combination of edgy and iconic. She is the hottest new DJ to land a record deal with Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation.

Not only is she an accomplished musician, but she has brains too! Harley double-majored in Egyptology and Social Science at New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Studies. She’s also been named Dior Beauty’s house DJ and beauty ambassador.

To top it all off, this accomplished lass has her own website showcasing the latest trends, music and people she likes. With brains, beauty and bravado in tow, Harley Viera Newton is one to watch!

French actress Léa Seydoux wore a Louis Vuitton custom made gown, earrings, 2 bracelets and a ring from the Louis Vuitton high jewellery collection to the 2013 Cannes Film Festival:

Lea wore a strapless gown with a front slit in Periwinkle silk crepe, embroidered in a degrade of sequins at the hem and detailed with ivory silk satin on the bust.

A Louis Vuitton signature bow completed the look at the back.

I want Cara Delevingne caterpillar brows and Joan Smalls bold brows. In reality, I need a Frida Kahlo unibrow intervention. About 15 years ago I mowed (‘plucking’ is inaccurate) my ‘frames’ with a tweezer that left them a little thicker than a blunt pencil line that starts off well away from the point each should. (Tip: make a line from the outside edge of your nose upwards.) I’ve started using Elizabeth Arden Prevage Lash and Brow Serum to help fill out and reshape them, and I’ve also stopped tweezing. So far so good.

Jazz in the Cradle is a program of contemporary jazz concerts promoted by the NIROX Foundation and Gallery MOMO in the lawn amphitheatre of the NIROX Sculpture Park, which lies in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, 45 minutes west of Johannesburg and Tswane city centres.

The program was conceived in response to an intimate performance by Zim Ngqawana in the music room at NIROX following his brief residency as artist, in the wake of the traumatic vandalization of his acclaimed Zimology Institute.

In 2012 the first concert in the program saw Herbie Tsoaeli and his band mesmerize an audience of 500 aficionados. The promoters were pressed by the audience and musicians to extend the program.

We hope that this Tribute to Zim, performed by some of the leading musicians of our time – Feya Faku (trumpet), Ayanda Sikade (drums), Herbie Tsaoeli (bass), McCoy Mrubata (saxophone) and Nduduzo Mkhatini (piano and musical director) – will give further impetus to the burgeoning jazz movement in South Africa and consolidate Jazz in the Cradle as a fixture in the local circuit.

Excitement is mounting for the ballet of the year, South African Mzansi Ballet’s production of the timeless story of Cinderella. And the SAMB, in association with Marie Claire, is inviting students to design a magnificent gown for Cinderella to transform her on her very special night out – to the Prince’s ball, where she’s destined to catch his eye, win his heart and ultimately live happily ever after.

HOW IT WORKS

■ Download and complete the entry form here, write a short paragraph describing your vision for the gown, create a mood board and submit your entry, marked MC Cinderella, to Marie Claire, Associated Media Publishing, 21 St John’s Road, Cape Town 8001, by no later than 5pm on Monday 24 June – no late entries will be accepted.
■ A judging panel will select the winning entry by early July and will be briefed by SAMB about the specifications around the design of their ball gown.
■ The judges’ decision is final.
■ The winner will work closely with the costume makers (and SAMB) to complete the ball gown, which will be worn by the leading ballerina in the ballet.

The competition is open to students at design schools and tertiary-education centres in South Africa and to all other young, aspiring designers. The winning design will feature in this brand–new production and will become the property of SAMB. It will also be featured in the October 2013 issue of
