The Rape Crisis Trust faces possible closure
The Rape Crisis Trust Cape Town has helped more than 5000 women in the past two years alone. The trust now faces the possibility of closure, due to lack of funds. The Non-profit organisation (NGO) provides counselling for survivors and helps them negotiate the justice system to improve the conviction rates of rapists. They are therefore, a priority, especially in South Africa where rape figures are on the increase.
Due to lack of funds, mainly because overseas investors pulling out of the NGO, many of the centre’s staff were recently retrenched. Apparently some of the retrenched staff are staying on as volunteers as long as is personally feasible to make sure women and other rape victims get access to counselling and the other services they offer.
