Robin Hood Remixed
Remember Robin Hood Prince of Thieves with Kevin Costner as Robin, the hot Christian Slater (what happened to him by the way; his most notable recent achievement was being dumped by Tamara Mellon owner of Jimmy Choo?), and Alan Rickman as the dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham (who threatens to cut someone’s heart out with a spoon)? And then there was the movie’s theme tune ‘Everything I Do I Do It For You’ by Bryan Adams that was Number One for a billion weeks running? Sigh, those were the days. OK I know that was back in 1991 – when I was the discerning age of 11 – but I’m not sure that that Robin Hood can be topped.
So I went to see the new Robin Hood last night. I wasn’t exactly dragging my feet as I’m a huge Gladiator fan (yes some people admit these things) and thought Russell Crowe could work some magic. And it was… good. Not ‘Oh My God I Wish I Could See That Again For The First Time’ good. Just good. Russell Crowe was OK (he definitely peaked with Gladiator) and you can’t go wrong with the beautiful and talented Cate Blanchett – Sienna Miller was originally billed to be Maid Marion, what a relief that didn’t happen. The story is something new as it focuses on Robin’s life before he becomes an outlaw.
So the movie was mildly disappointing but fear not, Russell Crowe never ceases to delight with his antics off-screen. The UK’s The Telegraph reported that Crowe had a typical sense of humour failure while doing a radio interview on Radio 4. The interviewer suggested that Crowe’s accent had a hint of Irish in it (you know how the Brits get about foreigners trying to do a British accent). The Kiwi actor responded with his usual charm and tact ‘You’ve got dead ears, mate – seriously dead ears if you think there’s an Irish accent.’ The interviewer continued undeterred and asked if Crowe was trying to go for a Northern accent. Crowe’s response: ‘No I was going for an Italian … missed it? F— me.’ The interviewer carried on, obviously thoroughly enjoying getting such a rise, and asked if Crowe wanted to say his famous line from Gladiator ‘I’ll take my revenge in this life or the next.’ And with that Crowe stood up and stormed out the interview.
Like I said, he never ceases to delight.
