This month we celebrate the life story of Shirley MacLaine in our February issue. She’s wowed audiences for 50 years on and off screen and will continue to do so I’m sure. She’s one of those Hollywood legends who will definitely have to have a biopic film made of her life. Like Michelle Williams played Marilyn Monroe and James Franco played James Dean, who do you think would be the perfect young actress to play Shirley one day?

Lady Gaga is famous for her outrageous and more often than not controversial outfits. Surely no one will ever forget the raw meat dress she donned  at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. But once upon a time Gaga was a semi ‘normal’ high school student.

The photos appeared in the private Convent of the Sacred Heart Catholic school for girls’ yearbook in 2004. The Bad Romance singer looks fresh-faced, without layers of make-up, in a time when her name was still Stefani Germanotta. I wonder if she was voted ‘most likely to succeed’?

It seems that all is not well in Tinseltown as another celebrity starts 2012 off badly. Demi Moore has checked herself into hospital to be treated for exhaustion. The hospitalisation has sparked rumours that the 49-year-old actress has a substance abuse problem. Moore had a serious cocaine addiction in the ’80s, which she fortunately kicked after two weeks in rehab. Some sources claim the G.I. Jane star has been drinking heavily since she found out about Ashton Kutcher’s infidelity. We wish her all the best.

Splitsville is welcoming four new residence as two of Hollywood’s favourite couples are ending their relationships. Heidi Klum and her husband Seal are officially separated while Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis have also called it quits. No event showcased this sad story better than this year’s Golden Globe Award Ceremony.

Depp and Paradis have reportedly not been seen together on the red carpet in almost a year. At the Golden Globes, the Pirates of the Caribbean star decided to skip the red carpet completely and confirmed any lingering rumours about his split from Paradis. The couple were reportedly leading separate lives, which caused them to grow apart. They were together for 14 years, but never married.

Klum also attended the Globes without her usual arm candy. The Project Runway-host and her singer hubby announced on Sunday that they have officially separated. It has been reported that Klum could no longer deal with Seal’s party habits, which were out of control. The couple have been married for seven years and have four children together, including one from a previous relationship.

Take a couple of celebrities‘ body parts, mix them all together and what do you get? The perfect woman. In my opinion, not quite. She doesn’t even look human! Computer-generated images like this just shows (once again) that there is no such thing as a perfect woman.

On Monday, the iconic singer, Aretha Franklin announced her engagement to her longtime friend, William “Willie” Wilkerson. At the tender age of 69 she joked and said to the Associated Press that she’s getting married because she’s pregnant. I must say, I just love the idea that one can and does find love at any age. Aretha said they are planning a summer wedding on a private yacht. I’m sure she’ll be singing all the way!

Known for her signature monochromatic androgynous style, Janelle Monae is one of the coolest girls in the music business and we love it. Some have argued that it’s not very creative and that it’s time for her to switch it up, but I think she’s got the right idea. Its simple yet strong, comfortable, makes a statement and looks amazing, which makes getting down to her amazing tunes so much better. Miss Monet is our signature style icon for December, so get the look in your latest copy of Marie Claire. After watching the video below I’m totally putting on a tux and going dancing this weekend.

Anne Hathaway is engaged!  She is set to marry her boyfriend of three years, Adam Shulman. The couple confirmed the news through her representative, Stephen Huvane, yesterday. Seems like the engagement was bound to happen, since she recently told a German publication how she felt about getting married,  “I can definitely imagine that, yes. Before, when I thought of marriage, I was afraid that I would only marry for business reasons or because I wanted to live out a little girl’s fantasy. That’s not the case any more.”

It’s official – after six years of seemingly content matrimony the couple that gave ‘cougar’ a new meaning is calling it quits. In 2005, the then 43-year-old Demi Moore gave older women everywhere hope when she tied the proverbial knot with teen heart-throb , Ashton Kutcher. When rumours surfaced, this past September, about Kutcher’s apparent romp with one rather verbal Sara Leal (and on his sixth wedding anniversary, just to add insult to injury!), this bond began to break. Now, after what appeared to be a brief attempt to ‘try again’, Moore has decided to put her foot down and call it quits. And we can’t blame her one bit.

In an interview with the Associated Press, she expressed her belief that there are simply some lines that shouldn’t be crossed.

‘As a woman, a mother and a wife, there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred,’ she stated. Only minutes later Kutcher tweeted with a hint of remorse, ‘I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail’.

And so the romantic fairytale comes crashing to the ground. A sad state of affairs (pun intended) but perhaps not entirely surprising.  After all, we are talking Hollywood and while Kutcher is in his prime, Moore, although still gorgeous, is almost 50. It certainly does beg the question: do relationships that span generations really work? And perhaps more importantly, can women truly play it like men and easily date younger guys? We’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter…
