Nia: Mind and body fitness
Who says exercise has to hurt? With Nia the phrase ‘no pain, no gain’ does not exist. Established in the 80s by Debbie Rosas, Nia is fusion fitness – a dynamic blend of the dance arts, martial arts and healing arts. It creatively integrates the mindfulness of the martial arts and meditative techniques, the grace and fluidity of the dance techniques, and the awareness and alignment of integrative body therapies.
In Swahili Nia means ‘with purpose’ – and that is how Nia teaches people to move. It is a path to condition, heal and express yourself though movement and sensation.
Balancing technical precision with free-form expression, Nia brings the body, mind, emotions and spirit to optimum health though music, movement and self-expression, guided by the sensation of Pleasure.
It is a technique that starts with fitness and ends with comprehensive healing of the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Nia is so kind to the joints, it is usually done barefoot. It is non-intimidating and focuses on dynamic movement – and is effective and fun.
Nia has been in South Africa for almost 10 years now with classes and instructors available all over the country. (There are currently 2 200 licensed teachers in more than 43 countries worldwide.)
